In an early post in this News Group, I have noted that there was "No evidence of the old KKK" in Santa Cruz history. For that I appolize as I recently found this 1869 clipping.
(Santa Cruz Times. May 8, 1869)
Ku-Klux.
Ku-Klux -- Within a short time we have had quite a little demonstration of these noble specimens of the "white man's party," the Ku-Klux-Klan. Some of them entered the house of John W. Jarvis, at Vine Hill, during his absence and that of his wife, drove some Chinamen off after horrible maltreating them, abused and terrified the children, declared their intention to Democratize the whole country, broke open the wine cellar and stole, broke and raised Cain generally with things. One of the party has been arrested. The officers are on the track of the rest of the party. |
